Effects of Preoperative Patient Teaching en Postoperative Recovery

Abstract
The present study was carried out at the Gospel Hospital and Busan University Hospital for 70 days from August 20 through October 30,1977 by 76 patients selected from among those who received laparatomy under general anesthesia. They were divided into Experimental Group consisting of 38 patients and Control Group consisting of 38 patients, respectively. The patients of Control Group were placed under general nursing provided by the Hospitals while those of Experimental Group were investigated by means of conversation and clinical observation in respect of matters which they desired to know and must bear in mind. The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of comprehensive teaching of preoperative patient under an individual program of educational contents of nurses on the postoperative recovery. The significance between the two groups was observed by T-test. The findings of this study was as follows: 1. The average period required until stitch out after operation was shortened in the experimental group (8.13, 1.50) compared with the control group (9.11, 1.79) (T=2.506, P 0.05). 2. There was observed no significant difference between the two groups in the average period of hospital days after operation. 3. The period required for the first ambulation after operation was earlier in the experimental group (18.84, 3.25) than that in the control group (22.32, 7.08) (T=2.730, P 0.01). 4. The time elapsed until the first self-voiding after operation was earlier in the experimental group (19.29, 7.64) than that in the control group (27.97, 15.46) (T=4.079, P 0.01) . 5. There was observed no significant difference between the two groups in the frequency of applying an analgesics within 48 hours after operation.
